Wilton’s® Star – Red Jonaprince Select
Origin
Jonagold variety mutant.
Synonyms
Red Jonaprince, Wilton’s® Red Jonaprince, Red Prince.
Tree
The tree naturally grows strongly and forms a loose, spreading crown. The variety is recommended for growing in orchards on dwarf rootstocks.
Flowering and pollination
It blooms about 2-3 days before the Golden Delicious Reiders variety. Red Jonaprince, like all varieties from the Jonagold group, is a triploid, which means it is not a pollinator for other varieties. The best pollinators for it are Elstar, Gala, Pinova, Topaz and Braeburn.
Fruit Characteristics
Red Jonaprince enters fruiting early. It yields annually, stably and abundantly.
Flavour
The flesh is strongly compact, very hard, creamy-yellow, sweet-sour, aromatic, with high taste values.
Fruit
The fruits are characteristic because they colour very early and reach a deep red colour. The fruits are large or very large, on average 75-85 mm in size, spherical-conical in shape. The skin is shiny, smooth, 95 to 100% covered with an intense, blurred, burgundy blush. Even on the shaded side of the tree and in the middle of the crown. The fruits of Red Jonaprince have a higher sugar content and are firmer than those of other Jonagolds. Red Jonaprince has a high content of an anti-cancer component – anthocyanins.
Harvesting
Compared to standard varieties from the Jonagold group, the harvest is very early, falling in the third decade of September. It should be remembered that early colouring may be tempting to harvest too early, which adversely affects the excellent taste and later storage of the fruit. Another important advantage is the possibility of one-stage harvesting of the fruit. Firmness during harvest approx. 8.5 kg/cm2
Storage
Due to the exceptionally tight, fine-grained flesh, the fruit retains a long shelf life and an appetising appearance. In experiments in the USA, two weeks after the fruit was removed from the cold store and kept in room conditions at a temperature of 15 degrees C in May 1998, the firmness was 6.5 kg/cm2. Due to its excellent storage properties and exceptional durability in trade, it is an ideal export variety.
