Novajo®
Origin
Novajo is a red sport of the Jonagold variety. Discovered in Celgia in 1985 by H. Veuleman.
Tree
In the first years, rather vigorous after entering the fruiting period, the tree grows moderately. The variety has a favourable horizontal (spreading) arrangement of branches.
Flowering and pollination
As a triploid, it needs the presence of varieties that support pollination. Good pollinators for Novajo are: Gala, Idared, Pinova, Elstar, Professor Sprenger and Golden Gem. The triploid nature of the variety means that Jonagold Novajo is not a good pollinator for other varieties.
Fruit Characteristics
Enters the fruiting period early. Bears fruit regularly and abundantly.
Fruit
The fruits are large and very large with a dark red striped blush on a green surface with numerous lenticels. The apples are characterised by a deep depression in the calyx part. The fruit has light yellow, compact and very juicy flesh with a sweet and sour taste.
Harvesting
Harvest maturity falls in the period: end of September – beginning of October.
Storage
Regular cold storage: until January. In a controlled atmosphere (CA) until the end of July.
Suitability
Novajo is an interesting alternative to Jonagold’s dark red sports. The attractive dark striped blush, stability of traits and yields place Novajo high in the selection of varieties from the Jonagold group.
