Ligol Red
Origin
Red mutant of the Ligol variety.
Fruit
Fruits of medium to large size, spherical, slightly tapering towards the calyx, with ribs on the calyx side. The green skin is smooth, without rusting, shiny, with a slight waxy coating, covered in 80-95% with a purple-red, uniform blush, against which slightly darker streaks are visible, medium-sized, numerous lenticels.
Flowering and pollination
It blooms in the average apple blossoming time, the flowers are large, the flower buds are dark pink. Its good pollinators are: ‘Gala’, ‘Golden Delicious’, ‘Champion’, ‘Gloster’, ‘Idared’.
Tree
The trees grow vigorously, form a conical crown with numerous short shoots, and enter the fruiting period early.
Fruit Characteristics
The variety tends to bear fruit alternately, requires thinning of fruitlets and annual pruning. Well adapted to the climatic conditions of Poland, tolerates frosty winters well. The trees of the Ligol Red variety are moderately susceptible to apple scab and powdery mildew, but quite susceptible to fire blight. The variety is useful for intensive orchards.
Flavour
The fruit flesh is creamy with a greenish tint, medium-grained, firm, juicy, with a light aroma, sweet and sour.
Harvesting & Storage
The fruits reach harvest maturity in the third decade of September or early October. They store very well both in a regular cold store (until the end of March) and in a cold store with CA (similar to Ligol). During storage, they are very susceptible to grey mould and bitter apple rot.
