Gala Wildfire® RKD

Origin

Gala Wildfire® RKD is a natural bud mutation discovered by Richard Callahan in his Washington State orchard (USA). In 2019, we visited his orchard and saw firsthand how one branch of a Gala tree produced fruit 2–3 weeks earlier than the rest. The following season, the tree retained these unique characteristics. Thanks to Benoit Escande, owner of Viveros Escande nurseries in France, this variety was introduced to Europe within just a few seasons. Now, it is available exclusively at our nursery in Poland! Gala Wildfire® RKD stands out with its intense red colour and bright red stripes.

Tree

Growth: Slightly weaker (-10% to -15%) than standard striped Gala sports, but with a typical tree structure and foliage, making identification easy. A note should be taken it into account when developing new orchard quarters, as higher tree density per hectare is recommended. Similar to other Gala varieties, Wildfire® RKD has brittle shoots. Therefore, we recommend pruning sharp-angled or overly strong branches to encourage better branching at the correct angle.

Flowering

Slightly earlier – usually a few days before other Gala varieties. Despite its short growing season needed by the Gala variety to ripen, fruit size remains unaffected.

Harvest

At least 15 days earlier than other striped Gala sports, such as Galaval. Easy to determine optimal Wildfire® RKD harvest time – strong correlation between colour intensity and starch breakdown ensures precise identification of ripe fruit. Recommended: Two-stage harvest with a 2–3 day interval. French trials confirm that Gala Wildfire® RKD is consistently harvested 18–22 days before other Gala sports.

Fruit

The Wildfire® RKD apples are very tasty, and early harvest does not compromise their organoleptic quality. Ideal for fresh market sales – A great alternative to summer apple varieties. Storage Potential: Long-term storage trials are ongoing, but initial results suggest promising storage capability compared to other varieties.
