Crimson Crisp®

Origin

A scab-resistant, very attractive variety for organic farming. A high-yielding variety with exceptionally attractive fruit, offering an interesting alternative to existing scab-resistant varieties. It benefits from an early harvest time and consistent yields. The variety was developed at the Purdue Research Foundation, USA, and the license is owned by the IFO Research Station in France.

Tree

Moderate to weak growth, enters fruiting very quickly. Open crown with few leaves, ensuring regular fruiting.

Flowering and pollination

Mid-season flowering, similar to Golden Delicious. Requires minimal pruning and thinning, as it naturally sheds excess fruitlets.

Fruit Characteristics

The variety yields abundantly and regularly, due to its slightly weaker growth, stronger M9 clones can be successfully used and should also be taken into account when determining the planting density.

Fruit

Cylindrical, uniform apples, sized 70–80 mm, beautiful colouration, even in less favourable conditions, low susceptibility to russeting, very juicy, firm, and delicate flesh, sweet-tart taste (13% Brix) Crimson Crisp has a firm texture, making it ideal for commercial distribution.

Harvesting

Harvest starts about 10 days before Golden Delicious, at the end of the Gala harvest. Very convenient harvest window for local climatic conditions. Extended picking window – even when harvested late (after mid-October), the fruit retains its storage properties.

Storage

Excellent storage capability, even in regular cold storage. Retains firmness after storage. Can be stored in a controlled atmosphere (CA) until July. Very good shelf life, making it an ideal variety for long-distance transport to warm climates.
